Q2 Module 7 Progress Report

This week, I completed a full 40 hours, bringing my quarter total to 280 hours. Next Monday is Memorial Day, so both school and work will be closed in observance.

This week felt like it both dragged on and flew by. There were stretches where I didn’t have much to do, and others where I was extremely productive. As a tech department, we had several meetings to discuss how upcoming budget cuts and layoffs will impact technology across the district, and we outlined plans to adapt accordingly. We also created a list of projects to complete over the summer—tasks that aren’t feasible to do while teachers and students are present.

One major focus will be server migration. We’re still running some instances of Server 2008, 2012, and 2019, so we need to spin up and move services to newer servers. I’ve already created several VMs to temporarily host services and assist with the transition and backups. We’ve also migrated some services to a new server that, in my opinion, is a huge upgrade—16 cores compared to 4, and 128 GB of RAM versus 32 GB.

We’re also preparing to upgrade all district desktops over 10 years old to Windows 11. While most of our fleet has shifted to laptops, we still have aging hardware—including older desktops and Surface Pro 3s and 4s—that are not compatible with Windows 11. These machines are barely holding on and often struggle to keep up with daily demands.

In addition to compatibility issues, we’re facing a growing shortage of student laptops. Devices are frequently damaged, go missing, or reach the end of their life cycle, and with no current budget allocated for new equipment, next school year is shaping up to be a serious challenge for the tech department—and for everyone else depending on this technology to support learning.

Without replacements or upgrades, we risk increased downtime and inefficiency, making it difficult to maintain the level of support our students and staff need. It's going to require a lot of creativity and problem-solving on our part to keep things running smoothly.

Other upcoming tasks include:

  • Cleaning filters in classroom projectors
  • Re-racking switches at the bus barn

My contract end date is still unclear, and I’m not scheduled to work over the summer. That would leave just our system administrator and two tech specialists to handle summer projects. Speaking of summer, notices about non-renewal of contracts started going out yesterday. I haven’t received one yet, but I also haven’t heard back about the casino job I applied for last week.

Next week is a short one, so I’m not sure what projects I’ll be working on.
