Journal Entry: Implementing My Internship
My "internship" is actually a full-time job as a Technology Technician at a school district. I was introduced to this opportunity through a contact who informed me of an open IT position. At the time, I was working as a banker, but I knew I wanted to transition into the IT field. I updated my resume to highlight my education and technical skills and applied for the position. During the hiring process, I answered additional technical questions, and my coursework helped me confidently respond with the correct answers. After my in-person interview, I was selected as the top candidate out of over 15 applicants, even though I initially felt I lacked hands-on experience.
In this role, I am responsible for troubleshooting and repairing hardware and software issues, performing system maintenance, managing network infrastructure, providing user support and training, implementing security measures, and overseeing system upgrades and integrations. These responsibilities require a combination of technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and adaptability, all of which my education has helped prepare me for.
My coursework has given me the theoretical knowledge needed to apply IT concepts in real-world scenarios. Classes such as Databases & Data Analysis and IS Integration have helped me understand system management, while Project Management and Small Group Communications have improved my ability to work effectively within a team and communicate solutions to non-technical users. These skills have been essential in my daily responsibilities, especially when assisting staff with technical issues or planning system improvements.
This experience is invaluable because employers often look for a combination of formal education and hands-on experience. By working in this role while completing my degree, I am strengthening my technical foundation while gaining practical exposure to IT operations in a professional setting. This will help me transition into a more advanced role, such as a Network Technician or Technology Specialist, after graduation. My long-term goal is to continue advancing in the IT field, possibly specializing in network administration or cybersecurity.
